Big picture
Local partners are the destination: the restaurants, shops, and attractions travelers actually come for. Social posts put those partners in front of visitors, and tags and mentions make each post count twice. The partner gets the credit, and more people see the post.
Tagging and mentions, in plain terms
When a post is connected to a business’s own social account, the business gets a notification, can share the post with its followers, and readers can tap straight through to the business. There are two ways to make that connection:
- Mention: an @handle in the caption, like @rivertowncoffee. Readers tap it to reach the profile. Mentions work on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook, where they show as the Page’s name.
- Photo tag: an Instagram-only feature that tags the account on the photo itself. Tapping the photo reveals the tag, and the post shows up in that account’s Tagged tab.
How it works in Atlas
Atlas discovers your locations. We start with the businesses and attractions already in your content, along with the social handles Atlas can find for them. You can add more locations anytime.
Atlas creates posts for your calendar. It picks photos from your library and drafts posts, so your feed stays active without anyone starting from a blank page.
Atlas connects each post to the locations in it. Every generated post is linked to the accounts for the locations shown in its photos, so Atlas knows exactly who to credit.
Those locations get tagged and mentioned by default. Each attached account gets a caption mention and an Instagram photo tag wherever it has the matching handles. You review, adjust, or remove them before the post goes out, and nothing publishes until you approve it.
Common questions
Do I need to set anything up before Atlas can tag locations?
No. Your Locations list starts with the businesses and attractions already in your content, and Atlas attaches the matching ones to the posts it generates. It is still worth reviewing the list on the Config page early and adding the partners you plan to feature, so their handles are ready when a post needs them.
How do I add or change tags on a post?
Open Tags and Mentions in the post editor. Use Tag an Account to add a partner from your list, or Add Account if they are not in it yet. For each account you can turn Mention in caption and Tag Instagram photos on or off, fix a missing or wrong handle, or remove the account from that post.
Why didn’t Atlas tag the business in my post?
Atlas only tags automatically when it can connect a post’s media to a saved account. A post you created yourself, a community-uploaded photo with no location, or a business that is not in your Locations list yet will not be tagged on its own. Add the account from Tags and Mentions or on the Config page.
Where do the social handles come from, and are they always right?
When you add a location by searching for the business, Atlas checks its website for Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok links and asks you to review what it found. Treat that as a head start, not a guarantee. If the business has no website, or the site points to an agency account, enter the handles yourself. Facebook Pages sometimes need to be attached manually and may need extra verification before mentions work.
How many accounts can be tagged on one post?
Up to five. Networks treat heavier tagging as spam, so Atlas keeps to that limit on generated and manual posts alike.
What if a partner has no Instagram account?
They can still be on the post. Mentions and photo tags stay off for any network where the account has no handle, and switch on once you add one from the post or on the Config page.
Does tagging work on Reels and Stories?
Feed posts support both caption mentions and Instagram photo tags. Reels support caption mentions but not photo tags. Stories do not support tagging.
Can I turn automatic tagging off?
Yes, under Config › Atlas Settings › Tagging Settings. New generated posts still show which locations were in the media, but mentions and photo tags stay off until you turn them on for a post. Existing posts are not changed. You can also leave it on and adjust individual posts instead.
Is adding an Instagram collaborator the same as tagging?
No. Collaborator invites are a separate control under Advanced that bring another Instagram account onto the post. Tags and Mentions credit an account with a caption mention or photo tag.
